Kaleidoscope at STRAAT Museum: Studio ZEPA’s Tribute to Vision and Unity.

This monumental artwork, measuring approximately 4×8 meters, stands as a testament to their artistic journey. It is a symbol for their commitment to themes of global unity and inclusivity.

In 2022, Studio ZEPA—comprising South African-born mural artists Page33 and Zesta—unveiled Kaleidoscope, a vibrant canvas at STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam.

A vibrant mural titled _Kaleidoscope_, featuring a colorful central figure with glasses, set against an abstract background, displayed at STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam.

Kaleidoscope features a central figure adorned with glasses, gazing purposefully into a colorful, bright future. This imagery encapsulates the duo’s exploration of contemporary urban style and demeanor.

Using only spray paint, the artists showcased a range of techniques, emphasizing the raw energy and fluidity of their craft.

The piece harmoniously blends abstract forms with realistic elements, utilizing illustrative line-work and a fauvist color palette. Nature motifs interwoven throughout the composition symbolize the inter-connectedness of humanity across diverse cultures and continents.

David Roos, the curator at STRAAT Museum at the time we painted the artwork, reflects on the significance of Kaleidoscope:

“Curating Studio Zepa to come and paint at STRAAT Museum was an exciting moment for me as a curator. Having first seen them paint live at the event Straatstukken, it felt especially meaningful to invite them back. Their piece Kaleidoscope bursts with vibrant colors and energy; a beautiful reflection of their African roots intertwined with their life in The Hague.”

Located in the NDSM wharf of Amsterdam-Noord, STRAAT Museum houses over 160 artworks by more than 130 international graffiti and street artists. As the world’s largest museum dedicated to urban art, STRAAT serves as a pivotal platform for showcasing the evolution and impact of street art in contemporary society.

Studio ZEPA: Beyond Kaleidoscope

Studio ZEPA’s artistic endeavors extend beyond Kaleidoscope. Their murals, such as Breath of Life in The Hague, continue to explore themes of identity, unity, and cultural expression. Their work is characterized by vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and a deep commitment to social commentary.

Kaleidoscope remains a significant piece in the realm of street art, reflecting Studio ZEPA’s dedication to exploring and expressing the multifaceted nature of human experience through their unique artistic lens.

From STRAAT Museum:

Kaleidoscope symbolizes the journey Studio ZEPA has taken as artists. The focus is on the protagonist’s perspective, who purposefully looks ahead toward a colorful, bright future. This captures a touch of contemporary urban style and attitude.

The artistic duo Studio ZEPA (Page33 and Zesta) creates harmoniously colorful work. In their murals and post-graffiti work, they strike the perfect balance between abstraction and realism. They have a recognizable and unique style that combines illustrative linework with Fauvist application of color. They regularly explore the theme of globality, addressing topics such as tolerance, equality, and inclusivity. Nature is present as an element that connects people from all walks of life worldwide.

For Studio Zepa, Kaleidoscope is not a destination — it’s a marker on a path. It reminds us of how far we’ve come, and how much farther we want to travel.

“Since its unveiling, Kaleidoscope has drawn visitors into contemplation. Many stop and linger, eyes tracking the color progressions, absorbing the layered narrative in silence. Others find themselves intrigued by how something so complex — in technique and symbol — can feel accessible, open, even playful.

Inside STRAAT, the painting sits among other works that push boundaries between street art and contemporary fine art. Its presence reinforces the museum’s mission: to situate street-rooted practice into a sustainable, preserved, and public-facing context. (STRAAT has grown rapidly since opening, boasting a permanent collection of over 160 works by more than 130 international street-art and graffiti artists.” Amsterdam NOW+1)
